La Tour FIDES has always been a symbol of culture and renewal. Nestled in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, the tower pays tribute to the history of the former Éditions Fides building while embracing the modernity of downtown Montreal.
In that same spirit, we launched an art competition in partnership with Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, inviting emerging artists to create a piece that would bridge the past, present, and future of La Tour FIDES.
Today, we are thrilled to announce the winning artwork: “What Was”, a sculptural bookshelf designed for the building’s main lobby.
An Artwork Between Memory and Transformation
“What Was” is an inspiring creation that celebrates the intellectual and architectural heritage of this historic site. The sculptural bookshelf is conceived as a visual representation of publications as artifacts, symbolizing the knowledge and ideas that have come to life here over the decades.
Its structure evokes both the historical legacy of Éditions Fides and the new direction of the building, now dedicated to contemporary residential living. This dialogue between past and present makes the piece much more than an installation—it is a bridge between collective memory and urban renewal.
A Competition Rooted in Emerging Artistry
This initiative was born from a unique collaboration between MTL Development and Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Students and recent graduates were invited to propose an artwork that would capture the spirit of La Tour FIDES—a place where culture, design, and community come together.
The submissions impressed the jury with their creativity and symbolic depth. Among them, two finalists were shortlisted, and in the end, “What Was” stood out for its artistic relevance and its ability to embody La Tour FIDES’ mission: to preserve heritage while embracing modernity.
“We are extremely proud of this collaboration with Concordia University, which reflects our commitment to integrating art and culture into our real estate developments,” said Labid AlJundi, President of MTL Development. “This piece pays tribute to La Tour FIDES’ history while symbolizing its rebirth and future.”
Art at the Heart of La Tour FIDES
At La Tour FIDES, every detail has been carefully considered to create a living environment that is both inspiring and soothing. The integration of an artwork into the lobby is not merely decorative—it is an invitation to reflection, discovery, and connection with the space.
We warmly thank the winning artist for their talent and vision, as well as all participants for their creativity and dedication.
We look forward to unveiling the final installation, which will enhance the experience of residents and visitors alike upon the opening of La Tour FIDES.
A Place Where History Continues to Be Written
With “What Was”, La Tour FIDES continues its story—one of an iconic building transformed into a contemporary living space, where art, culture, and architecture exist in perfect harmony.
